How to choose the material for the cooling tower body?
Currently, the outer panels of closed cooling towers generally use galvanized steel panels, aluminum-zinc coated panels, magnesium-aluminum-zinc coated panels, and stainless steel panels. As a new type of panel, magnesium-aluminum-zinc coated panels are increasingly favored by closed cooling tower manufacturers due to their high corrosion resistance, self-healing properties, and low cost. Based on the experience of the corrosion resistance of galvanized and aluminum-zinc coated panels and the high cost of stainless steel panels, magnesium-aluminum-zinc coated panels were first introduced in the closed cooling tower industry. Today, let's share about this amazing panel.

Magnesium-Aluminum-Zinc Coating
Magnesium-aluminum-zinc coating belongs to pre-coating treatment (as opposed to post-dip galvanizing) and is a type of hot-dip galvanizing (as opposed to electro-galvanizing). The materials are divided into magnesium-aluminum-zinc coated sheets and coils. Generally, magnesium-aluminum-zinc coils are rolled at steel mills and then enter traders' hands as original coils. By leveling, magnesium-aluminum-zinc sheets can be obtained. Therefore, magnesium-aluminum-zinc can be classified as coils or sheets. The specific chemical composition (secret formula) is not publicly disclosed. The publicly known chemical composition is: 11% aluminum, 3% magnesium, a very small amount of about 0.5% silicon, and the remainder is zinc.

Advantages of Magnesium-Aluminum-Zinc Coating
1. Performance Advantages: Other coatings such as galvanized and aluminum-zinc cannot compare with magnesium-aluminum-zinc in terms of corrosion and rust resistance. Compared to galvanized sheets, under the same coating thickness, the service life of magnesium-aluminum-zinc is 10-20 times that of galvanized. This is normal because the original purpose of magnesium-aluminum-zinc is to use a thinner coating metal to achieve the effect of a thicker galvanized layer. It is 3-5 times that of aluminum-zinc. The product is positioned as a high-quality coated material. Interested friends can inquire at Shanghai Baosteel. Nippon Steel and Baosteel have conducted comparative experimental data. From salt spray test results, magnesium-aluminum-zinc far exceeds its peers.
2. Specification Advantages: The maximum thickness specification for galvanized sheets is 2.0 mm, and this is only for imported galvanized sheets—not because manufacturers are unwilling to produce thicker sheets, but because the technology does not support it. As thickness increases, the difficulty of coating the material grows exponentially. The maximum thickness for aluminum-zinc coated sheets is 2.5 mm, mostly imported aluminum-zinc and domestic Xin Da Zhong brands. Magnesium-aluminum-zinc can be produced up to a maximum thickness of 9.0 mm, with a production range of 0.27-9 mm. Currently, the spot market in China offers specifications from 0.5 to 5.0 mm. Materials outside this range need to be ordered directly from steel mills.

3. Cut Edge Protection: Cut edge protection, also called self-healing, is a special feature unique to magnesium-aluminum-zinc coating. Why can galvanized and aluminum-zinc coatings resist rust? Because the surface has a metal coating! If there is a width requirement and you need to cut the material to a specific width using a shearing machine, the cut edge will have no coating protection. What happens then? It will rust! Therefore, many galvanized and aluminum-zinc sheets start rusting from the edges. Remember, magnesium-aluminum-zinc's inherent cut edge protection ensures this does not happen. Its surface coating has fluidity and will gradually cover the exposed base metal over time without any additional treatment. This feature is unique to magnesium-aluminum-zinc and is especially effective for porous plates that require rust resistance.
