The dry–wet combined closed-circuit cooling tower is a highly efficient and environmentally friendly cooling device that integrates the advantages of both dry and wet cooling towers, and is widely used in industries such as power generation, chemical processing, and metallurgy.
Its operating principle is The circulating water first flows through the finned tubes and then enters the coil. The outer surface of the coil is enveloped by sprayed water, and heat from the circulating water is transferred to the spray water through the coil wall. Simultaneously, the spray water flows in a counter-current direction relative to the incoming air, facilitating heat exchange and generating saturated, moist, hot air, which is then discharged by the fan. When the external spray system is shut down, the cooling tower can still dissipate heat via its built-in finned structure, thereby achieving water conservation and fog suppression.
The advantages of this type of cooling tower include: It boasts high cooling efficiency, conserves water resources, reduces operating costs, and addresses the limitations of air cooling—namely its poor performance in summer—and the high water consumption associated with evaporative cooling, thereby striking a balance between water conservation and effective cooling. Moreover, it can operate in dry mode even at elevated ambient temperatures, achieving substantial water savings, while featuring intelligent control for economical operation.
In terms of application scenarios Dry–wet hybrid closed-circuit cooling towers are particularly well suited to water-scarce, arid regions such as Northwest China, where they help reduce water consumption and lower operating costs. At the same time, they are also ideal for areas with abundant power generation—such as wind, hydro, tidal, and nuclear power regions—because their dry-mode operation requires a large air volume and substantial fan motor power, thereby making full use of the region’s plentiful electricity supply.
In summary, the dry–wet combined closed-circuit cooling tower is a comprehensive systems technology that integrates multiple disciplines, including aerodynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, static and dynamic structural mechanics, and intelligent control, and thus holds broad application prospects.
