How can a closed cooling tower be protected from freezing?

1. Operating a closed-circuit cooling tower below 0°C may lead to freezing of the fill material and air inlet windows, depending on your设定 for the chilled water outlet temperature. It is generally recommended to maintain an outlet water temperature of no lower than 10°C during winter. However, if lower temperatures are beneficial for operation, ensure that the system is run within this reduced range.

It is generally recommended that the water outlet temperature in winter should not fall below 10°C. If lower temperatures are beneficial for operation, ensure that the system operates within this reduced range.

When the temperature reaches the required level, stop the fan operation whenever possible.

Too-low water outlet temperatures may lead to frost formation. It is recommended to install an electric heater, which can be activated when needed to raise the water temperature.

During extended shutdowns (such as the Spring Festival holiday), connect a compressed air source to the exhaust valve on the cooler's water inlet to blow out the circulating water from the coil, ensuring the cooler coil remains completely dry. Then, cover the outdoor unit to provide insulation and prevent freezing.

2. Preventing Coil Freezing in Closed Cooling Towers During Winter Operation

Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are excellent coil antifreeze solutions. Follow the recommended dosage as specified by the antifreeze manufacturer.

Anti-freeze precautions!

I. The Internal Circulatory System

1. Add antifreeze fluid (such as ethylene glycol). Taking ethylene glycol as an example, it has high solubility and a low freezing point—indeed, the higher the concentration, the lower the freezing point. However, be mindful that excessively high concentrations may negatively impact the cooling tower's performance. Therefore, it’s important to maintain the right balance. Also, after winter ends, make sure to replace the water inside the tower with fresh, clean water for continuous circulation.

2. If the cooling tower remains idle for an extended period and antifreeze has not been added, the circulating water inside the pipes can be drained.

3. When the ambient temperature is above 0°C, the机组 can use an automatic control system to prevent freezing. If the outlet temperature drops too low, the spray pump will automatically shut down. If the temperature continues to fall below this threshold, you can try stopping the fan—this will also help avoid ice formation, as the water temperature inside the pipes will gradually rise after these measures are taken.

II. External Circulatory System

1. Prevent the lower sink from freezing (optional: install an electric water heater, etc.)

2. Insulation material can be installed on the circulation pipes outside the sink.

3. When not in use for an extended period, drain the external circulation water and keep the sink pump's drain valve open.
