What is a wet-bulb temperature? How is it calculated?

Dry-bulb temperature The dry-bulb temperature is the temperature typically measured by a thermometer in ordinary air. In simple terms, it’s essentially what weather forecasts often refer to as Celsius. Wet-bulb temperature The wet-bulb temperature refers to the air temperature when the air reaches saturation under conditions of constant enthalpy. On an air psychrometric chart, it corresponds to the dry-bulb temperature at the point where the air state moves along an isenthalpic line downward until it intersects the 100% relative humidity line.

Dry-bulb temperature

Dry-bulb temperature is the temperature typically measured by a thermometer in ordinary air.

Plain-language description

You could say it's the Celsius degrees often mentioned in weather forecasts.

Wet-bulb temperature

The wet-bulb temperature refers to the air temperature at which water vapor in the air reaches saturation under the same enthalpy condition. On an air enthalpy-humidity chart, it is represented by the dry-bulb temperature corresponding to the point where the air state moves downward along an equal-enthalpy line until it intersects the 100% relative humidity line.

Specific description

When measuring the wet-bulb temperature, a common thermometer's sensing bulb is wrapped with moist gauze, with the lower part of the gauze immersed in water. This ensures that the air humidity at the sensing location remains saturated, while maintaining adequate airflow around the gauze to allow the surrounding air to approach an adiabatic saturation state. Once the reading stabilizes, the temperature indicated by the thermometer is considered approximately equal to the wet-bulb temperature.

Wet-bulb temperature

In regions with lower wet-bulb temperatures, the same closed-circuit cooling tower can handle a larger volume of water. If profit is a consideration, the cooling tower can even be selected smaller.

Specific description

In the operation of closed-circuit cooling towers, the wet-bulb temperature represents the cooling limit for these towers. In other words, no matter how well a closed-circuit cooling tower is designed or what size model is selected, the cooled water can theoretically only approach the wet-bulb temperature at most.
