Performance Comparison Between Closed-Loop and Open-Loop Cooling Towers!

Closed cooling towers (also known as evaporative air coolers, closed-loop cooling towers, or enclosed cooling towers) are designed with a tubular heat exchanger housed inside the tower. Cooling is achieved through the circulation of air and the spray of water on the exterior of the tubes, which facilitates heat exchange between the circulating water inside the tubes and the external air, thereby ensuring effective temperature reduction.

Closed cooling towers (also known as evaporative air coolers, closed-type cooling towers, or enclosed cooling towers) are designed with a tubular heat exchanger installed inside the tower. They rely on the circulation of air and the spray of water over the tubes to facilitate heat exchange between the external water and the internal circulating water, thereby ensuring effective cooling performance.

Due to the closed-loop circulation of water within the pipes, the system effectively ensures that the water quality remains uncontaminated, thereby safeguarding the efficient operation of the main equipment and significantly extending its service life. Additionally, when external temperatures are low, the spray water system can be shut down, resulting in substantial water-saving benefits. With the implementation of national energy-saving and emission-reduction policies and the growing scarcity of water resources, closed-circuit cooling towers have seen widespread adoption in recent years across various industries, including iron and steel metallurgy, power electronics, mechanical processing, and air-conditioning systems.

First: A device that cools by circulating fluid within a closed pipeline, isolated from external air. Heat is transferred through the tube walls of a heat exchanger to external media such as ambient air or spray water, ultimately achieving cooling and temperature reduction.

Therefore, the cooling process prevents contamination, evaporation, and concentration, eliminating the need for water replenishment or chemical addition. This ensures optimal performance and extended service life of connected equipment, while also simplifying daily maintenance and management.

Second: No frequent shutdowns are required for maintenance, ensuring stable and safe operation while reducing the failure rate of associated equipment. Ideal for systems that require continuous operation.

Third: Since the cooling medium is shielded from sunlight and does not come into contact with air, it prevents the growth of algae and the formation of salt crystals. This eliminates the need for algae removal and desalination processes, thereby ensuring high-performance operation of the system.

Fourth: It can operate in dry conditions without breeding any pathogens, making it particularly suitable for environments requiring air purification. It is also frequently used in arid and water-scarce regions.

Fifth: When the fluid is a volatile, toxic, or irritant solution, a closed-loop circulation system should be used to prevent environmental contamination. Therefore, it is widely applicable to systems with stringent fluid requirements.

Sixth: The cooling medium flows through a closed pipeline system. Typically, the cooling medium is softened water, ensuring that no scaling occurs within the system pipelines or in the heat exchangers of the cooled equipment. This results in high operational efficiency for the cooled equipment and contributes to energy savings throughout the entire system.

Performance of Open-Circuit Cooling Towers

First: In open systems, the cooling medium circulates, and due to evaporation, the circulating medium becomes concentrated. This necessitates continuous addition of chemicals and water replenishment throughout the year. Additionally, since the cooling medium is directly exposed to air, it is prone to contamination. Under sulfurous weather conditions, the fluid may undergo acidic reactions, leading to damage in associated equipment.

Second: Requires frequent shutdowns for maintenance and upkeep, making it unsuitable for systems requiring continuous operation.

Third: The cooling medium operates in an open system and is exposed to sunlight, making it prone to the growth of algae and salt crystallization, which can adversely affect the system's operational performance.

Fourth: Dry running is not possible.

Fifth: When the fluid is a volatile, toxic, or irritant solution, operating the cooling tower in an open-loop mode poses safety risks.

Sixth: The cooling medium circulates in an open system, making the system pipelines and heat exchangers of the cooled equipment prone to scaling. This reduces the heat transfer efficiency of the cooled equipment and increases the operational costs of the system.

What are the advantages of a closed cooling tower compared to an open one?

1. Closed cooling towers operate with a fully enclosed circulating cooling system, eliminating the risk of debris entering the cooling pipeline and causing blockages.

2. The closed cooling tower utilizes a soft water circulation system for cooling, ensuring that no scale forms even under high-temperature conditions, thus preventing scaling in the cooling pipeline system.

3. Closed cooling towers occupy a small footprint, eliminating the need to excavate pools, making relocation convenient while conserving water and reducing energy consumption.

4. The closed cooling tower employs a dual cooling method combining air cooling and evaporative heat absorption, delivering high cooling efficiency.

5. Directly compatible with media such as cooling water, oils, alcohols, quenching fluids, brine solutions, and chemical liquids, ensuring no medium loss and stable composition.

6. Due to the use of a closed-loop system, the medium is unaffected by the environment and does not cause any environmental pollution.

7. The pressure loss of the cooling water must be lower than that of an open cooling tower.
