What’s the lowest temperature a closed-circuit cooling tower can achieve?
A closed-circuit cooling tower is an important piece of industrial cooling equipment. When selecting one, users often wonder: just how low can the temperature be brought down?
A closed-circuit cooling tower is an important piece of industrial cooling equipment. When selecting one, many people wonder: just how low can the temperature be brought down? In fact, this question is rather difficult to answer. Below, we’ll examine it in detail from two perspectives.
Temperature drop amount
If the temperature of the cooling medium is 75°C and it is reduced to 30°C by a closed-loop cooling tower, then the cooling tower’s temperature drop is 45°C.
If the temperature of the cooling medium is 40°C and, after passing through a closed-loop cooling tower, it is reduced to 30°C, then the cooling tower’s temperature drop can be said to be 10°C.
However, the temperature of a closed-circuit cooling tower cannot drop indefinitely. The extent of its cooling is directly related to the wet-bulb temperature of the site where the equipment is installed.
Wet-bulb temperature
The calculation of the wet-bulb temperature is, in essence, a scientific issue. Simply put, it refers to the lowest temperature at which water can evaporate under natural environmental conditions. We then define this temperature as the lower limit of what a closed‑circuit cooling tower can achieve. While this limit is typically a theoretical value, in practice, a closed‑circuit cooling tower cannot reach it exactly; the actual achievable temperature is generally about 3°C higher than the wet‑bulb temperature. This allows us to estimate the cooling capacity of the unit and provides a reliable basis for selecting the appropriate equipment.
When measuring the wet-bulb temperature: 1) Wrap the sensing bulb of a standard thermometer with a moist gauze; 2) Keep the lower portion of the gauze immersed in water to ensure that the air surrounding the sensing element is saturated; 3) Maintain adequate air circulation around the gauze so that the surrounding air approaches an enthalpy‑equivalent state; 4) Once the reading stabilizes, the thermometer’s indicated value can be taken as an approximation of the wet-bulb temperature. This method provides a reliable basis for determining the cooling efficiency of a closed‑circuit cooling tower and offers valuable guidance when selecting equipment.
