Things to Know About Winter Freeze Protection for Closed-Circuit Cooling Towers!

As soon as winter arrives, closed-circuit cooling towers also need to take necessary antifreeze measures to safely weather the winter and ensure smooth production operations. During winter operation, especially in cold regions, circulating water and spray water are prone to freezing, which can cause pipes and internal equipment to rupture. Therefore, it is essential to implement appropriate antifreeze measures for the equipment during winter.

As soon as winter arrives, closed-circuit cooling towers also need to take necessary antifreeze measures to safely weather the winter and ensure smooth production.

During winter operation, especially in cold regions, circulating water and spray water are prone to freezing, which can cause pipes and equipment interiors to rupture. Therefore, during winter, it is necessary to take appropriate antifreeze measures for the equipment.

Anti-freeze measures:

1. During winter operation

When the ambient temperature drops below 0℃, even without spray water, the heat exchanger coil itself dissipates a significant amount of heat, resulting in no external heating load and making the circulating water prone to freezing. It is recommended to use a liquid mixture containing ethylene glycol or propylene glycol to prevent the coil from freezing, or to maintain the outlet temperature of the circulating water at ≥7℃. Alternatively, a hybrid approach combining dry and wet operation on an intermittent basis can be adopted; however, intermittent operation should not be performed too frequently, as this could lead to excessive scaling and reduce the efficiency of heat transfer.

2. During winter shutdowns

During short-term shutdowns of the cooling tower in winter, electric heating or steam can be used to heat the spray water in the spray water tank. Alternatively, during the shutdown period, the water inside the equipment can be drained into other storage tanks.
