How to Distinguish Between the Three Types of Closed-Circuit Cooling Towers
Whether it's an open-circuit cooling tower or a closed-circuit cooling tower, they are generally categorized into two types: crossflow and counterflow. In a crossflow cooling tower, the direction of the incoming air is perpendicular to the direction of the water flow. This type of cooling tower is suitable for residential central air-conditioning systems; it produces low noise, has a simple structure, and is easy to maintain. In contrast, a counterflow cooling tower has the incoming air flow directed exactly opposite to the water flow. It occupies a smaller footprint but generates slightly more noise. It is particularly well-suited for industrial cooling applications, such as in the casting, forging, and heat treatment industries.

Counterflow Closed-Circuit Cooling Tower
Application scope: With a compact structure and small footprint, these units can be freely combined in multiple configurations to meet various requirements for water volume and temperature differences, making them suitable for conventional cooling applications. In counterflow cooling towers, air enters from the bottom in a counterflow manner, alternating with the downward-sprayed water to form saturated, humid, and hot air. Heat is exhausted through top-mounted fans, while moisture is captured by a specially designed dehydrator and returned to the collection basin for recycling. The design is compact and requires minimal floor space.

Crossflow Closed-Circuit Cooling Tower
Application scope: Derived from cross-flow cooling towers, this type is suitable for applications involving multiple units operating in parallel to achieve various water flow rates. However, its efficiency is relatively low. The working fluid flows through the coil, while the outer surface of the coil is enveloped by sprayed water. Heat from the liquid is transferred through the tube walls, forming saturated moist-heat steam that interacts with both water and air. The heat is dissipated into the atmosphere by fans, while the condensed moisture is directed back into the collection tank for recirculation and reuse—resulting in minimal water consumption. During the recirculation process, PVC heat-dissipating fins help lower the water temperature, creating a vertical airflow pattern between the fresh incoming air and the recirculated water. An important feature of this operational principle is its high likelihood of inhibiting the formation of scale on the outer surface of the coil.

Composite Flow Closed-Circuit Cooling Tower
Scope of application: Suitable for cooling high-temperature fluids or projects with significant temperature differences, these systems have relatively high energy consumption and larger dimensions. Closed-circuit cooling towers with mixed-flow designs—requiring minimal maintenance and featuring a hybrid flow configuration—are among the most efficient closed-circuit cooling towers available on the market. In mixed-flow cooling towers, the process coolant is contained within a clean, fully enclosed circuit, thereby avoiding contamination. At the same time, these towers integrate both the functions of a cooling tower and a heat exchanger, offering outstanding operational and maintenance performance.
Selection of counterflow closed-circuit cooling towers, crossflow closed-circuit cooling towers, and hybrid-flow closed-circuit cooling towers: As long as they meet the requirements of the design specifications, their cooling performance will be the same. However, it is recommended that in regions with relatively high temperatures, crossflow or hybrid-flow closed-circuit cooling towers be chosen, while in most other regions, counterflow closed-circuit cooling towers are the better choice.
