Why do cooling towers use counterflow cooling? What is the difference between counterflow and cross flow?
Hot water from the top of the tower down, air from the lower part of the tower up, reverse flow for heat exchange of the cooling tower. It can effectively use the contact area, extend the contact time, force the mouth strong evaporative cooling effect, give full play to the air heat storage capacity, widely used. Generally, it is used when the cooling water is large, the cooling effect is required to be stable, and the water quality is relatively clean.
Reason:
Hot water from the top of the tower down, air from the lower part of the tower up, reverse flow for heat exchange of the cooling tower. It can effectively use the contact area, extend the contact time, force the mouth strong evaporative cooling effect, give full play to the air heat storage capacity, widely used. Generally, it is used when the cooling water is large, the cooling effect is required to be stable, and the water quality is relatively clean.
Difference:
1. The structural form is different. Crossflow is cross, with wind and water flowing in a cross direction; countercurrent is the opposite direction of wind and flow. This is the fundamental difference, (in my opinion, the essential difference).
2. Maintenance and maintenance convenience. Most of the components of the cross flow are exposed and accessible. Regardless of size, they can basically be checked without stopping the machine and cleaned internally. The components of the counter flow are basically wrapped inside the shell plate, which is invisible and inconvenient for maintenance.
3. Dimensions. Cross flow is generally rectangular (single fan), that is, the width is large, the length is small. The countercurrent is basically square, with the same length and width.
4. Drain water density. In terms of design, the density of the packing of the cross-flow tower is much greater than that of the counter-flow.
5. Packing height. The packing height of the cross-flow column can theoretically be made infinitely high, while the packing height of the counter-flow column is limited.
6. Design flexibility, in fact, the design flexibility of the cross-flow tower is far greater than the countercurrent tower, because most of the domestic manufacturers and products are the main push countercurrent tower, the research on the cross-flow tower is far from enough.
7. Treatment of large temperature difference. In terms of large temperature difference treatment, the cross-flow tower can use the flexible design of the packing height to achieve satisfactory results.
8. The cross-flow tower has low noise, much smaller drift rate, stable operation, because the middle of the cross-flow tower is empty, easy maintenance, can be carried out without stopping the machine. And the structure is not the same, relatively speaking, the area is also smaller than the countercurrent tower.
The installation height of the counter-flow cooling tower is high, but the area is small; the installation area and weight of the cross-flow cooling tower are larger than the counter-flow type, but the height is low, and it is often used in the height of the building roof and other occasions.
