Cooling Tower Operating Principle Diagram

What is a cooling tower? It is a device that uses water as a circulating coolant, absorbing heat from a system and releasing it into the atmosphere to lower the water temperature. The cooling process is achieved through the evaporation of water, allowing the cooled water to be continuously recycled. From an economic perspective, this approach effectively reduces unnecessary cost waste.

I. Cooling Tower Principle

1. What is a cooling tower? It is a device that uses water as a circulating coolant to absorb heat from a system and release it into the atmosphere, thereby reducing the water temperature. The cooling process is achieved through the evaporation of water, allowing the cooled water to be continuously recycled. From an economic perspective, this approach effectively minimizes cost waste.

2. What is its cooling principle? The cooling method used in cooling towers involves spraying hot water onto the surface of the heat-dissipating material, where it comes into contact with air flowing through. At this point, significant heat exchange occurs between the hot water and the cooler air. Simultaneously, a portion of the hot water evaporates—transferring its latent heat of vaporization into the surrounding air. Finally, the cooled water drips back into a collection basin, from which it is pumped to the heat exchanger, where it once again absorbs heat.

Operating principle:

Internal circulating water system: The cooled circulating water flows out of the tower through the coils and is pumped back to the heat source (the equipment being cooled) by the system's circulating water pump. After absorbing heat and warming up during the heat exchange process, the circulating water then returns to the coils for further cooling.

External circulating water system: External spray water is cooled as it comes into contact with the coil and packing, transferring heat to cool the water circulating inside the coil. The cooled water then falls into the lower water tank, where it is pumped back to the spray water tank by the spray water pump for reuse in the cycle.

The internal loop facilitates heat and mass exchange between the cooling water flowing through the coil and the spray water and air outside the tubes, preventing direct contact between the cooling water and air that could lead to water quality contamination. Additionally, since the spray water is pre-cooled by passing through PVC packing, the heat transfer efficiency is significantly enhanced.

Work process:

The spray pump draws water from the sump, pumps it to the upper part of the heat-exchange coil, and then sprays it upward in an umbrella-like pattern through nozzles. This creates a continuous, even water film that evenly coats the outer surface of the tubing. As the water flows over the tubes, some of it absorbs the high-temperature refrigerant's thermal energy inside the pipes, converting it into latent heat of vaporization and causing the water to evaporate into gas. Meanwhile, the refrigerant within the tubes is cooled down or condensed into liquid form. Any remaining non-evaporated spray water eventually drips back into the spray water sump.

The ventilation system features a suction-type fan at the tower's top, which draws air from inside the tower and exhausts it outward. Meanwhile, cool, dry air from outside the tower enters through the air intake grille, passes through filters to remove impurities, and then flows upward along the bottom of the heat-exchange coil. This process carries away the evaporated water vapor, increasing both the humidity and temperature of the air before it is finally expelled back outside by the fan.

A float valve is installed inside the spray water tank to automatically replenish and supply water when the water level drops, ensuring a consistent water level in the tank.

Electrical control automatically manages the start and stop of the spray pump and fan based on the refrigerant outlet temperature, achieving energy-saving goals.

How it works:

The working fluid (water, oil, or other liquids) flows through the coil, while the outer wall of the coil is continuously sprayed with water. Heat from the fluid is transferred through the tube walls, causing the water and air to become saturated with moist, hot steam. This steam is then exhausted into the atmosphere via a fan. Meanwhile, the spray water circulates through PVC heat-dissipating fins, where it gradually cools down before being reintroduced into the system. Fresh incoming air flows in the same direction as the cooled spray water, creating a concurrent airflow pattern. Primarily relying on the principle of wet-heat conduction, the key feature that makes this closed-loop cooling tower highly effective is its ability to minimize scale buildup on the outer surface of the coil.
