How are cooling towers classified as counterflow and crossflow?

The structural forms differ: In crossflow (CROSSFLOW), the air and water flow intersect at right angles; whereas in counterflow (COUNTERFLOW), the air and water move in opposite directions—this is the fundamental distinction.

1. Different structural forms

Crossflow refers to the cross six (CROSSFLOW), where wind and water flow intersect at right angles. In contrast, counterflow occurs when wind and water move in opposite directions—this is the fundamental distinction. For a detailed comparison, please refer to the table below:

2. Ease of Maintenance and Inspection Most components in the cross-flow design are externally exposed and easily accessible—whether large or small—and can generally be inspected and internally cleaned without shutting down the system. In contrast, components in the counter-flow design are mostly enclosed within the outer casing plates, making them both invisible and difficult to access for maintenance.

3. In terms of dimensions, countercurrent systems are typically rectangular—meaning they have a greater length and narrower width. On the other hand, crossflow systems are usually square-shaped, with equal length and width. When it comes to placement within the space, for the same volume of water, a crossflow setup might allow for a slightly shorter length compared to a countercurrent arrangement.

4. Water distribution density. From a design perspective, the packing in counterflow towers has a significantly higher water distribution density compared to crossflow towers.

5. Packing height: While the packing height of a crossflow tower can theoretically be made infinitely high, the packing height of a counterflow tower is limited.

6. Design Flexibility In fact, the design flexibility of crossflow towers is significantly greater than that of counterflow towers. Since most domestic manufacturers and products primarily promote counterflow towers, research on crossflow towers remains severely underdeveloped. Theoretically, designing, fluid analysis, and thermal calculations for crossflow towers are also considerably more complex compared to those for counterflow towers.

7. Handling large temperature differences. In terms of dealing with significant temperature variations, cross-flow cooling towers can achieve satisfactory results thanks to their flexible design featuring high packing heights.

8. Crossflow cooling towers produce less noise and have a significantly lower drift rate, ensuring smooth operation. Since the center of a crossflow tower is hollow, maintenance is convenient—you can perform repairs without shutting down the system. Additionally, their unique design results in a smaller footprint compared to counterflow towers. If you’re working on a large-scale project, we recommend opting for a crossflow tower; for smaller projects, a counterflow tower would be more suitable.

9. Counterflow cooling towers are installed at greater heights but occupy a smaller footprint; on the other hand, crossflow cooling towers have larger installation areas and heavier weights compared to counterflow types, yet they are lower in height—making them ideal for spaces with height restrictions, such as building rooftops.
