Oasis Ice Peak: A Comprehensive Guide to Closed-Circuit Cooling Tower Maintenance and Servicing

The water basin at the bottom of the cooling tower must be filled with fresh water; softened water is recommended, and the pH level should be maintained within the range of 6 ≤ pH ≤ 8. Residues on the air intake grilles and filter screens should be removed weekly to ensure smooth operation—this interval can be adjusted downward as needed—to guarantee optimal cooling performance.

1. The water basin at the bottom of the cooling tower must be filled with fresh water; softened water is recommended, and the pH should be maintained within the range of 6 ≤ pH ≤ 8.

2. Residues on the air intake grilles and filter screens should be removed weekly to ensure smooth operation; the interval can be shortened as needed to maintain optimal cooling performance.

3. Regularly monitor the condition of the spray water; if any abnormalities are detected, check the piping and nozzles for blockages.

4. Pay attention to whether dust accumulation on the fan surface has caused imbalance, preventing fan malfunctions that could disrupt production.

Heat Exchanger Antifreeze Issues

Pay special attention to:

The heat exchanger in this unit is made of thin-walled copper tubes. When the ambient temperature drops below 0°C, residual water remaining inside the copper tubes will freeze after the unit is shut down, potentially causing the copper tubes to crack due to ice expansion. Therefore, during cold winter conditions, please take note:

1. During winter operation, it is recommended to switch the circulating liquid inside the heat exchanger to antifreeze to prevent freezing and potential damage to the heat exchanger in case of prolonged or short-term shutdowns due to low temperatures. (Please note that the company will not provide warranty coverage for losses caused by freezing.)

2. In winter, freezing can cause pipes to burst, so circulating water should be drained promptly. Additionally, any accumulated water in the circulating water pipeline system, as well as in valves and pump bodies, should also be removed.

3. Drain the water from the spray trough and water tank, and perform an internal cleaning. Open the drain valve to release all remaining water, then use compressed air to thoroughly dry the inside of the heat exchanger and the circulation pipes.

4. External covers should be installed to protect the exhaust ports and tower body. For the water tank or reservoir in the circulation system, it is recommended that, during equipment installation, the liquid medium level inside the tank or reservoir remain below the heat exchanger when the system is shut down.

In winter, promptly clean the water in the sink without using a sprinkler system.

Warning: Antifreeze must be added when operating in winter!!!

Regarding supplementary water volume

(1) Evaporation Loss

The cooling tower evaporates a portion of the water, utilizing its latent heat of vaporization to lower the circulating temperature inside the heat exchanger. As a result, the amount of water sprayed decreases, which is considered normal consumption.

(2) Drift Loss

The unavoidable water loss—resulting from the combination of water droplets discharged by the fan along with moist, hot air, and the amount of water drifting outward from the inlet grille—is directly related to the design of the air intake grille. Our company’s air intake grille features a honeycomb structure with an inward tilt, which minimizes water loss to the greatest possible extent.

Regarding Scaling

(3) Wastewater Discharge

Due to the normal evaporation of spray water into pure water, the undissolved components in the remaining spray water become concentrated. As a result, the concentrations of scaling substances such as calcium and magnesium ions continue to rise, leading to scale formation on the outer surface of the heat exchange tubes during the spraying process. This, in turn, impairs heat transfer efficiency. Over time, prolonged operation will cause the heat-exchange capacity to steadily decline, ultimately affecting the smooth continuation of normal production.

To reduce scaling and ensure the quality of the spray water, a portion of the spray water needs to be discharged, thereby lowering the concentration of scaling ions in the water and maintaining proper water quality. This process is known as blowdown.

(4) The typical amount of water to be replenished is: evaporation + drip irrigation runoff + drainage volume.
